Koda’s Adventure Story Is An Innovative New Take On The Chinese Lantern
Although the history of Chinese Lanterns dates back to the Han Dynasty in China as far back as 206 BCE, it doesn’t mean that lantern creators aren’t innovating on the traditional Chinese lantern. Tianyu Arts & Culture is continually improving with new themes and technology in its 2025 lantern collection, as well as a unique tale called Koda’s Adventure Story tying it all together. Through the use of innovative AI software, articulating limbs, and amazing illusory experiences, Tianyu’s Koda’s Adventure is pushing the boundaries and innovating an age-old tradition.
Koda’s Adventure Story is an Imaginative Narrative Tale
Koda is an eight-year-old boy who, through sketches and imagination, brings to life the fantastic spectacles that are the lanterns at Tianyu’s Lights Festivals. Whether it’s the exotic rainforests of eastern Peru, whispering wheat fields of the midwestern United States, or glowing reefs of the illuminated sea, the story behind Koda puts the viewer in the front seat.
Koda’s story is ultimately the observation of nature through a child’s perspective, unhindered by bias and ready to embrace the world and nature found right beneath their feet. There are unique stories for Koda, which are all reflected in the lustrous lanterns on display at festivals across the United States.
Magical Forest: Koda and his father arrived at Caballococha in eastern Peru, marking the beginning of their long-awaited journey into the Amazon rainforest. Every night, Koda found it difficult to fall asleep. While lying under his blankets, he sketched everything he had seen during the day. Visitors will be able to experience his imagination come to life through our luminous lights and lanterns!
Magic Ocean: It all began with a dive into wonder. On a visit to the Georgia Aquarium, Koda was swept away by the mysteries of the sea — by glowing reefs, graceful jellyfish, and the dreamlike world beneath the surface. That night, the ocean followed him into his sleep, where it transformed into something even more extraordinary. Magic Ocean brings that dream to life, inviting you to wander through an illuminated undersea realm where imagination swims freely, and every lantern pulses with light, color, and the spirit of adventure.
Starlit Farm: Beneath a sky dusted with stars and among whispering wheat fields, Koda traveled to his grandparents’ quiet village and discovered a different kind of magic later that summer. Far from the ocean’s depths, the countryside glowed with its own quiet wonder. Fireflies danced like floating lanterns, and the soft hum of nature echoed the rhythm of his dreams. In this peaceful village, surrounded by farmland and starlight, imagination bloomed. Starlit Farm invites you into Koda’s sketchbook come to life – a glowing tribute to childhood summers, pastoral beauty, and the endless stories written in the night sky.
The Origins of Koda’s Adventure

The idea for Koda’s Adventure sprang from a simple, yet powerful realization: the world, seen through the eyes of a child, is inherently magical. Tianyu Arts & Culture wanted to create a narrative framework that was both respectful of the past and entirely accessible to a modern, global audience. Director of Creative, Zongyuan Lin, decided to use imagination as the central element, personifying that boundless creativity in the character of Koda, an eight-year-old boy. Koda is a stand-in for every child — and every adult — that embraces creativity.
This meant a significant shift in design approach. Unlike standard thematic lantern designs, which focus on related elements, the lanterns for Koda required a pre-planned creative script. This script had to establish a relationship between lanterns that precisely aligned with the visitor’s walking route. As Koda’s Main Designer, Xue Li notes, “The ultimate destination of exploring the world is to better understand our own home. The greatest power of imagination isn’t to transport us away from life, but to transform our lives into wonders worth immersing ourselves in.” Similarly, whether it’s Magic Forest, Magic Ocean, or Starlit Farm, Koda’s boundless imagination and natural surroundings dictate the lanterns created.
Of course, translating this imaginative script into a physical experience presented numerous challenges. As a craft involving handcrafted light sculptures, material selection is highly restrictive. The team had to constantly balance environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and safety.
Although the team initially conceptualized around 40 story scenes for a single show, they ultimately had to eliminate about half based on the park’s scale and installation capacity. This focus on personal wonder and the child ‘s-eye view is the essential element that ties together the wildly diverse themes, from the Amazonian rainforests of Magical Forest to the tranquil farmland of Starlit Farm.
The Innovative Science Behind Koda’s Adventure Lanterns
In addition to the strong narrative threads running through Koda’s Adventure Story, the festivals themselves implement new technologies and techniques to engage visitors in all-new ways. Take for instance the Coral Reef lantern featured in Magic Ocean in Dallas, where speaking to the lantern can change its color using AI voice-recognition technology.
Tianyu also found ways to elevate their articulating limb technology, using it in Starlit Farm with their barn with a rotating windmill. Fully immersive experiences, like the Corn Maze or Mermaid’s Palace, totally surround the visitor with the creativity and imagination of Koda. Mermaid’s Palace, in particular, has a color-changing effect that utilizes iridescent films combined with LED light strips. Visitors can interact with the harp installation, changing the color of the entire exhibit through the harp’s illuminated tones.
Other installations like the Seahorse room also use some unique tech. Using advanced lighting programming, a computer calculates and controls thousands of LEDs at the same time, creating a cascading rain of light in a mesmerizing display of glowing fish. These technologies and techniques combine to create an engaging overall festival that ties each installation and experience into a cohesive story.
